Guided tour Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics
Admission: free

20 March 2019, 14:30 and 22 March 2019, 10:00

Meeting Point: see site plan
Duration: approx. 2 hours
Programme: ASDEX Upgrade - Control room - Energy centre - Tandem accelerator - Visitor centre

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching and Greifswald is researching the physical basis for a fusion power plant. Similar to the sun, it is supposed to generate energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei.

With around 1100 employees, the institute is one of the largest centres for fusion research in Europe. At the IPP in Greifswald, research is being conducted on the large stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. During your visit to Garching, you can get to know the ASDEX Upgrade experiment, a large Tokamak plant. ASDEX Upgrade went into operation in 1991 and investigates core issues of fusion research under conditions similar to those of a power plant. This will provide the physical basis for the international test reactor ITER, which is currently being built in France in worldwide cooperation, and for a later demonstration power plant.

The guided tour takes you to the experiment halls, to the ASDEX Upgrade fusion facility, to the control room, from where the plasma experiments are controlled, and to the power supply for the experiments, the large shock generators. In the visitor centre, models and interactive exhibits give you an overview of fusion research.
